The Department of Biotechnology is the infant department of Koneru Lakshmaiah College of Engineering established in the year 2002-03 with an aim to link up life sciences with Engineering technology. The Department went for accreditation by NBA of AICTE for the first time in 2007, and was accredited for three years; as a matter of fact this is the only Engineering Collegein Andhra Pradesh where the B.Tech, Biotechnology program is accredited by NBA

The Department has an intake of 60 students and presently the total strength is 200 for all years among whom girls are 106 and boys are 94. In the last two outgoing batches 10 of our students secured university ranks. The department also has few students from Nepaljoining through our foreign students counseling cell.

As a part of student centric learning the students various measures and initiatives are taken to improve the skills of students, these include, exposure to guest lectures, industrial training and tours, communication and soft skills, Mini Projects, paper presentations in national level paper contests, class room seminars, placement opportunities, academic and career counseling, certificate courses, live projects in industry, exposure to journals and so on.

The faculty of the department is very much focused in the thrust areas of Research and Development in vivid fields of biotechnology such as Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Bioreactor technology, Fermentations, Genetic Engineering, Molecular biology, and Microbiology.

Another area where the faculty is concentrating is Research consultancy. The department has signed MOU’s with National Institute of Nutrition, Sneha Biotech, Sri Srinivasa Oil Palm Industries, Sri Krishnaveni Agro Industries, for faculty and student training and collaborative research. Consultancy is being offered in terms of Academic and Technical parameters to students from outside colleges and small-scale industries.
