About the Department
The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002 with an aim to link up Life Science with Engineering technology. The Department offers a four year B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc and Ph.D Programs in Biotechnology, Accredited by NBA of AICTE, and is the first College, in the state of Andhra Pradesh where the course received recognition. The Department has eighteen highly dedicated and research minded faculty members among whom 9 are doctorates with industry and academic background. During the last five years more than 80 papers have been published in peer reviewed journals. Faculty has filed Patents on novel ideas and is also actively involved in consultancy. The department has more than one crore of government funded projects by sponsoring agencies viz DST, DBT and UGC.

Objectives of Biotechnology Program
Biotechnology is the research-oriented science including a fusion of biology and technology. This study includes a large variety of subjects including Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry, Virology, Immunology and Engineering. It is associated with other subjects such as Health and Medicine, Cropping System and Crop Management, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Soil Science and Soil Conservation, Ecology, Bio-statistics, Cell Biology, Seed Technology, Plant Physiology etc. Biotechnology features the use of living cells and bacteria in the industrial process. Biotechnological principles can be applied in developing vaccines, medicines and diagnostics, improving energy conservation. There is a great scope for career in biotechnology in India as well as abroad. Career in Biotechnology offers various employment opportunities in R and D labs, marketing and production in the fields like Medicine and Healthcare, Animal husbandry, Agriculture and Environment industries.

Biotechnology sector is rapidly growing in India and is a very exciting sector with tremendous possibilities. It is an emerging field, yielding wonder drugs, new and improved varieties of plants and animals. Scientists work on a variety of sophisticated equipments, prepare chemicals, and maintain experimental microbial, plant tissue culture in research labs. Under graduation or post graduation in Biotechnology with an MBA allows individuals to settle as Entrepreneurs, generating employment for many more.
