National Service Scheme (NSS) UNIT
History of NSS
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched in 1969 with an aim to involve mainly undergraduate students on a voluntary basis. Various activities like social service and national development are carried out for contribution towards socio-economic progress. NSS provide opportunities to the students to understand the problems of the communities, awaken social consciousness and inculcate a sense of dignity of labour.
KLEF Grants Commission headed by Dr.Radhakrishnan, recommended introduction of national service in the academic institutions on a voluntary basis with a view to developing healthy contacts between the students and teachers on the one hand and establishing a constructive linkage between the campus and the community on the other hand.
MOTTO
The motto of the National Service Scheme (N.S.S.) is "Not Me, But You", This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless services and appreciation of another man's point of view and also show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole. therefore it should be the aim of the N.S.S. to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day activities.
Aim
This programme aims to inculcate the social welfare thoughts in the students, and to provide service to the society without any prejudice. NSS volunteers work hard to ensure the needy gets every possible help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In the process the volunteers themselves learn a great deal about the life in the villages, how people struggle and yet lead a contented life despite extreme scarcity of resources. The NSS promotes overall personality development through social service 'Not Me, But You'.
NSS DAY
NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, on the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes & activities.
