Abstract:

The communication standards for communicating over computer networks are quite stabilized with more enhancements taking place. On the other hand no specific well published communication standards for effective communication among several embedded systems are existing. Communication standards like CAN, Firewire are looking at limited scope of applications and have used specific protocols in those standards. It is becoming more or less necessary that a communication standard be implemented for every type of distributed embedded applications. As on date many protocols are being used especially in physical and data link layers for effecting communication between embedded systems. Most of the implementations are application specific. This paper presents a CAN based generic communication standard (GCAN) that can be used universally for implementing any of embedded and distributed application.
