Abstract

Hydrodynamic lubrication has a significant role in wear and friction of bearings. It is also known that load and speed on bearings can influence the lubrication mechanism. The present work focuses on this mechanism based on qualitative analysis of thermo hydrodynamic lubrication of asymmetric rollers with non-Newtonian power law incompressible lubricants including Newtonian as well. Here it is discussed theoretically for heavily loaded rigid system with cavitations; where the consistency of the power law lubricant is assumed to vary with the mean temperature. The fluid flow equations such as the equation of motion along with continuity and heat energy equation are solved first analytically and then investigated numerically by Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method with step size control together with some reasonable tolerance  10-5. The various bearing characteristics are presented in the form of tables and graphs so that we can have an idea how they are varying as per their characteristics. As a result of this work, it is found that there is a significant difference in temperature, pressure, load and traction with Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.
