The Department of Mechanical Engineering orgaised a Guest Talk by
Dr.R.L.Tummala, Chair Dept.of Electrical and Computers Engg. San Diego State
University, USA , on 24th March 2011, at 10.00 in Pea Cock Hall. The talk was
attended by 3rd year and Final year students of B.Tech- Mech.Engg. / IPE / IST
and ECE.
The talk mainly focussed on Robotics and the modalities of a
particular engineering discipline in the said theme, it also concluded that any
research in current days is having value addition only if its of
interdisciplinary approach and blends various disciplines of Engineering with
Life Sciences in particular.
The speaker also emphasised on Self
Learning initiative i.e Capstone design, which is developing a live project or
model by an individual or in groups but with out any technical or theoritical
support from the faculty. This aspect of the curriculum at San Diego State
University is making the students well trained on themselves and gain lot of in
depth hands on experience in the concepts that they learn in due course of their
curriculum, and is making them a more competent and much demanded prospective
candidate for the job market. This concept is almost in line with the one of
Open Labs at our K L Deemed to be University, that we are in process of developing. The
speaker insisted that in Open Labs KL must concentrate more on Inter-
departmental Software and hardware and provide meagre technical support, but
with proper prior exposure to the students, and if possible make this lab a
credited course, by linking it to the thesis or Practice School such that more
number of students will partcipate with better interest.
There were
discussions earlier with the speaker in chambers of Dr.K.Raja Sekhara
Rao,Principal KLCE / Dean Admin. for prospective tie up of K L Deemed to be University with
San Diego State University, and the talks were fruit ful and the guest assured
of a long lasting tie up both in terms of Knowledge exchange as well as research
support. Dean R&D- Dr.K.V.Ramana, HOD Mech.Engg. - Dr.Y.V.Hanumantha Rao, In
Charge Open Labs - Dr.A.Srinath and In Charge Foreign Relations Mr.Kishore Babu
were present on the occassion.
