National Students'' Conference on Recent Advancements in Civil Engineering RACE 2013

24-25 August 2012: The Civil Engineers' Association (CEA) of the Department of Civil Engineering, K L Deemed to be University organized a two day National Students' Conference on Recent Advancements in Civil Engineering RACE 2012 in association with Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE - KL Chapter) and Cafet-Innova Technical Society (CITS).

Dr. R. Sree Hari Rao, Vice-Chancellor of K L Deemed to be University presided the inaugural function along with Dr. K.R.K. Prasad, Dean (SR&C), Dr. A. Anand Kumar, Principal - College of Engineering and Dr. Ch. Hanumantha Rao, Professor & Head Department of Civil Engineering, K L Deemed to be University.

Sri. P. Ganapathi Raju, Senior General Manager (Quality Assurance), Anjani Portland Cements Ltd. was the Chief Guest for the inaugural function. He highlighted the requirement of quality civil engineers for the industry. He also addressed the media on the necessity of such student level conferences that gives exposure on latest advancements.

Nirmaan Sanjeevani the Mobile Concrete Testing Laboratory was arranged by Anjani Portland Cements Ltd. during the two day conference. All the participants of the conference were benefitted by the various demonstrations at the laboratory.

The conference received 115 papers from various states including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, etc. Out which 67 papers were selected for oral presentation in the conference. Around twenty papers were recommended for publication in the International Journals published by Cafet-Innova Technical Society, Hyderabad.

Field visits were arranged to the participants to witness the Radiant Cooling Technology and Post Tensioning of Insitu Beams used for the new Library building and Raft Foundation of Staff Quarters at K L Deemed to be University. There were also visits to Ready Mix Concrete Plant, demonstration of Differential Geo-Positioning System (DGPS) and Total Station by Mr. B. N. Rao and Mr. Harish from TOPCON.

Sri. K. Shiva Rama Prasad, Managing Director of Domineer International Ltd. was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function. In his note he mentioned that students should focus on learning technologies and applying their ideas rather than just scoring marks.

Cash prize of Rs. 5000/- was presented to Ms. D. L. Gayathri from Samskruthi College of Engineering & Technology, Hyderabad for winning the Best Paper Award in order to support her further research on "Experimental investigation on Pervious Concrete"

Ms. K. Bhargavi M.Tech student from NIT-Warangal won the second Best Paper Award for her work on "Influence of zero shear viscosity of asphalt binder on the permanent deformation characteristics of asphalt mixes"

Mr. Singaravadivelan M.Tech student and Mr. A. Lourdu Alphonse B.Tech student from Infant Jesus College of Engineering & Technology, Tamil Nadu won the Third Best Paper Award for their work on "Experimental investigations on the behaviour flexural strengthening of a beam using Basalt Fibres"
