KL College of Engineering (KL-CE)* has emerged Top 1 among all private sector engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states as per National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2016.

* KL-CE is represented in NIRF rankings as Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF), the name by which the institution was originally registered with the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Great Honor
With the evaluation being performed by the Government of India, the top 1 rank is evidently a big honor for KL-CE, also considering the fact that the college is placed ahead of not merely all private engineering colleges, but all of the state government run engineering colleges in the two states.

NIRF 2016 is a widely acclaimed and pioneering initiative of the Government of India's Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to evaluate and rank higher education institutions and universities in public and private sectors in India.

The final rankings (the outcome of NIRF 2016) published by the MHRD in April 2016 are also called India Rankings 2016. For detailed rankings of India's top engineering colleges and NIRF's methodology, visit https://www.nirfindia.org/engg .

All India Rank
It is common knowledge that the Central Government funded T-schools in India fare much better than privately funded, self financed, and state government funded institutions. However, NIRF's comprehensive methodology and transparent approach has assessed and rated KL-CE ahead of 11 Union Government funded engineering schools including 8 NITs and 2 IIITs. The said institutions (like KL-CE) were termed Category A by MHRD and figure on NIRF's list of top 100 engineering colleges - see below. KL-CE is ranked top 59 in India.

  1. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Raipur (rank 63)
  2. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar (rank 65)
  3. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar (rank 67)
  4. National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST), Beharampur (69)
  5. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa (76)
  6. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur (78)
  7. Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) Kancheepuram-Chennai (80)
  8. Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST) Shibpur, West Bengal (83)
  9. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Patna (89)
  10. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Delhi (92)
  11. National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru (96)

To be ranked No.1 engineering college in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states, ahead of all state government run engineering colleges, and better than 11 Central Government institutions (8 NITs and 2 IIITs included) represents an unquestionable recognition of KL-CE's vision, long-term investment, and commitment to achieving superior standards and performance in both education and research.

NIRF: Overview
NIRF 2016 is a widely appreciated initiative by the Government of India's Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to assess and rank India's public and private sector higher education institutions and universities. The initiative was formally launched in September 2015 and the rankings were announced in April 2016.

The framework outlines a robust methodology and transparent approach to evaluate and rank higher education institutions and universities across the country. The methodology was conceived from the recommendations of an MHRD set-up 16-member core committee. Participation by colleges and universities in the rankings was voluntary.

Ranking is based on 22 parameters under the following five broad heads:

  1. Teaching, Learning, and Resources
  2. Research and Professional Practices
  3. Graduation Outcomes
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity
  5. Perception

Ranking methods have been worked out for six categories of institutions: Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Universities, Architecture, and Colleges. However rankings for architecture and general degree colleges were not carried out since participation in the NIRF rankings by Architecture colleges was very limited, while the performance of general degree colleges that participated in the rankings failed to meet the minimum benchmark of standards.

Rankings of Category B engineering institutions have not been announced for this year, since data from most of them showed major inconsistencies and lacked the much needed credibility for proper evaluation.

Category A institutions are those that are engaged in both teaching and research, while Category B institutions are predominantly engaged only in teaching. Considering the very significant amount of fundamental and sponsored research KL-CE undertakes each year, the college has been classified as Category A institution.

Collaborators: National Board of Accreditation (NBA), All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), INFLIBNET Center, Web of Science (Thompson Reuters), SCOPUS (Elsevier), and India Citation Index have all collaborated with the MHRD's Department of Higher Education in the massive effort of conducting India Rankings 2016.
